This is a study-abroad class, but the professor can learn, too.
For today’s blog, I had a whole list, in no particular order, of some things I learned — or relearned — during my two weeks in Prague. But after one event tonight, I threw out the carefully crafted sentences about how people are the same everywhere, and how students, left to their own devices, coach each others’ writing instinctively. I can skip the insight into curtainless showers requiring too much concentration and Greek salads translating into any language, including Czech.
Tonight the brass quartet serenaded us from the ramparts again as they did last Saturday night. As we got ready for our last dinner together, their playlist varied from classical to “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.”
Then, just before we were ready to walk out the door, the group started its last song of the night, “Imagine” by the Beatles. Some of us had eaten lunch at the John Lennon Pub and strolled once more by the graffiti-covered Lennon Wall, a symbol of peace and political hope to young Czechs in the 1980s. Until 1989, when the Communists were ousted, that wall carried Beatles lyrics and tributes to freedom, even with repeated white washings. Still today, sprinkled in with tourist comments, are messages of hope and love.
Could I have any more appropriate song now running through my head?
Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
